Race Report: GOTR 2017

November 18th

Concord, NH

This was Ky’s second time doing Girls on the Run.

Let me preface by saying this Ky does not like running. At all. But this was her second time doing GOTR bc she really wants to like running and she wants to get better. She’s so cute and I can’t be more proud of her for sticking with something she doesn’t like to try and get better at it. #proud mom. I also totally feel her pain, I despised running when I first started.

It is a really great program. They teach girls so many things, life lessons, self-esteem etc etc while doing running games and prepping for a 5K at the end of the program. She would come home and tell me about what they learned and I know some sank in because she would correct herself when she was talking. She would say how she wasn’t good at running and then say oh right we don’t use negative self talk and would correct herself to something more positive. They do a community service project as well which is really cool 🙂

If you want to learn more about it, you can do so here: https://www.girlsontherun.org/

It was really cold that morning so we got a little bundled up and went to hang out with her team (we had to be there an hour early). Ky had a blast warming up doing zumba, having her face painted, signing posters. The whole atmosphere was awesome. Super high energy and a lot of fun.

We were able to leave our stuff at the team’s meeting place so we didn’t have to worry about it while we were running. She started out with this really great plan of running intervals (3 min run, 1 min walk). That lasted approximately 1 interval haha. Then it turned into a whole lot of walking and a little bit of running. Which was fine. There were so many people walking we were still in big crowds of people. She was ok the first mile, had a pretty crappy attitude the 2nd mile and was back to being better by the 3rd mile. She would also full out sprint to the water stops if she knew one was coming…I can totally relate to that feeling 😉 I was bribing her to run tree to tree or for the count of 10. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn’t.

It took us FOREVER to finish, but we had a really good time. She has no interest in running anymore, which is ok too. We have one more race to go…our annual trip to Yule Light Up The Night.
