11th Annual Lone Gull 10K

WHEN:
September 24, 2017 @ 9:00 am
WHERE:
Good Harbor Beach (Parking Lot)
Thatcher Road
Gloucester, MA 01930
I did this race in 2014. It was my first ever 10K and the first race I ever did without walking. I was a very sporadic runner then and I did not like running at all! But this race was amazing. It has to be one of my favorite courses. Rolling hills, beautiful views. You can read about it here, I did a brief mention of it in my history leading up to my life of tri πŸ˜‰
I am in Gate City Striders this year and Lone Gull is one of their races. Lori and I had talked about running it (she was def running it bc she is doing every race in the series) so I figured why not πŸ™‚ I love the race and it would be nice to go back and do a 10K. I haven’t done a standalone 10K since 2014.
We coordinated a meet-up and figured we would head up together. Her amazing wife drove and we complained about how we didn’t want to run. Motivation is at an all time low. We shared a ton of laughs. So many laughs. It was definitely much needed triff time. I missed that girl A TON!!
I met them at their house at 6am and we were on the road at 6:15 πŸ™‚ Obv we stopped for coffee and breakfast on the way. Who doesn’t eat an egg sandwich and coffee before a race??
It’s about an hour away and we got there soooooo early, but it was nice to screw around relax all morning…being the loud girls that we are. I mean seriously, here we are complaining that we don’t feel good, we forgot sunblock, I said I think I’m getting sick (thought I was getting a cold, turns out I had strep…oops), Lori says ugh I have a cold and my period…FML. And then this very nice older gentleman walks over and says I don’t mean to eavesdrop, but here’s some sunblock. The embarrassment lasted about 2 seconds before we laughed that this poor guy had to listen to us complain about girl problems haha. #sorrynotsorry
Took a million pics. Obviously. It’s what we do.
Did a tiny warm up. I’m not actually sure you can call it that. And then we were off.
We ran a chatty, just for fun race. I mean really is there anything better than running along the coast. There are no hills that are challenging. We caught up on what was going on over the last month.
There really isn’t a lot to say about this race. The hills are all rolling, relatively flat course. The toughest hill is the one right before the finish, it’s short and sweet. Then downhill to flat to finish. Tons of people. All ranges of abilities. It was just as beautiful as I remember. I should def do it more than every 3 years πŸ˜‰
Lori and I just took the day for fun. We stopped at both water stops. We stopped once, I’m not really sure why, we stopped twice to take pics, and once to take a gel at mile 3. When I say there was no racing, there was no racing. All chatting, just lots of fun. Laughing that we only need to add on 20 more miles to our next race. No big deal πŸ˜‰
The post race food. Full breakfast! How do you go wrong with walking along the beach and then getting breakfast?
It was supposed to be a double run day for me, but I ended up taking a trip to urgent care bc my throat was on fire by 4pm and I knew I had strep…AGAIN! Second freaking time this year, I know exactly how I got it, and I can’t complain, but ugh lol. So needless to say I didn’t get my second run done.
Honestly though, it was the perfect day and much needed πŸ™‚ End of the season racing is tough.
Ended up with a 10 min PR from 2014 without even trying. I’ll take it πŸ™‚
Finished in 1:07:xx with a pace of 10:47. Not bad for screwing around the whole time 😜
Next stop: Baystate Marathon. EEEKKKK!!!
